Realm of Fire and Forgotten Gods
Southwest of Khann’s cityport, beyond the treacherous reefs and storm‑wracked channels, lie the Savage Isles—a chain of volcanic lands shrouded in mist and myth. Ancient sailors called them the World’s End, believing the sea boiled there where the Fire Lord slept. The Isles were formed by the eruptions of a colossal volcano whose heart still glows red, feeding rivers of molten rock through thick tropical jungles.
Long before pirates and tribes claimed the shores, the Maztek Empire thrived here—a civilization of gold‑clad builders and sun‑priests. Their cities, carved from obsidian and limestone, vanished when the volcano erupted in the Age of Ash, burying temples beneath lava and jungle. Today, explorers whisper of hidden Maztek ruins, filled with golden idols and traps untouched for centuries.
The Isles became a cursed paradise. Giant mosquitos spread fever and madness, while dinosaurs and monstrous reptiles roamed freely. The survivors—dark‑skinned tribes and mutant lizard‑men warped by volcanic fumes—turned to cannibalism and worship of the Fire Lord, a being they claim dwells within the volcano itself. His priests wear molten masks and chant to the earth’s heartbeat.
In later ages, pirates from Khann and the southern coasts found refuge among the Isles’ coves. They built hideouts and caches in the cliffs, trading stolen gems and relics from Maztek ruins. Many never returned—lost to disease, beasts, or the Fire Lord’s wrath. Yet treasure maps still circulate in Khann’s taverns, marked with cryptic symbols and warnings: “Beware the Red Mountain’s breath.”
Today, the Isles remain a lost world—a place of primal danger and forbidden wealth. Smoke from the volcano paints the sky crimson, and the jungle hums with unseen predators. Few dare to land there, but those who do speak of gold gleaming beneath the ash, and drums echoing from the heart of the fire.
Here are some adventure hooks for the Savage Isles, each tied directly to the lost Maztek ruins and the Fire Lord cult.
A pirate returns to Khann half‑mad, clutching a melted gold circlet he claims was taken from a Maztek sun‑king’s tomb. The Fire Lord cult now hunts anyone who touched it, believing the crown is a key to awakening their god.
The great volcano has begun to roar again. Tribesmen say the Fire Lord is restless, and Maztek glyphs near the lava fields glow at night. The heroes must decipher the ruins before an eruption unleashes something ancient.
A hidden Maztek city has been sighted deep in the jungle—its stone gates cracked open by an earthquake. Inside lies a labyrinth of gold‑lined corridors, but the Fire Lord’s priests claim the city is cursed and send hunters to seal it forever.
A mutant lizard‑man chieftain seeks outsiders to help overthrow the Fire Lord cult. He offers a map to a Maztek treasure vault in exchange—but the vault lies beneath the volcano itself, and the cult guards it with fanatical zeal.
