The Forge Beneath the Mountains
Deep beneath the central Dragon’s Teeth Mountains, the dwarves carved Frosthelm, an underground citadel overlooking Sky Lake. Its massive stone gates, etched with runes of endurance, guard the entrance to a labyrinth of tunnels and halls. Originally built as a mining fortress, Frosthelm grew into a thriving subterranean city—its walls echoing with the clang of hammers and the hum of mechanical lifts descending into the mountain’s heart.
Frosthelm became the beating heart of dwarven commerce, exporting Ironstone, precious minerals, and master‑forged weapons and armor across Tallanon. Barges from Laketown dock at the stone fort by Sky Lake, trading food and timber for dwarven steel. The dwarves’ craftsmanship is unmatched, and their word—once given—is said to be as unbreakable as their iron.
The city is ruled by King Ramni Ironheart III, a stern but fair monarch whose lineage traces back to the first delvers of the mountain. The dwarves worship Dranos, Lord of the Forge, patron of determination and commerce. His temple, carved from molten basalt, burns with eternal flame—a symbol of perseverance against the cold and dark.
For 625 years, Frosthelm has waged war against the Bone Breaker Orcs and Bleeding Eye Goblins that infest the Dragon’s Teeth. Yet darker whispers echo from below: that the dwarves have awakened an ancient, unspeakable evil in the deepest shafts—a presence older than stone itself. The king’s elite Iron Guard now patrol the lower tunnels, sealing passages and setting traps to contain what stirs beneath.
Today, Frosthelm stands as a fortress of endurance and ingenuity, its forges blazing while snowstorms rage above. Merchants from Laketown and beyond come seeking dwarven wares, unaware of the shadows lurking in the depths. The dwarves remain steadfast—unyielding, proud, and bound by their creed: “A Frosthelm dwarf always keeps their word.”
Here are a few adventure hooks for Frosthelm, each forged from its wars, trade, and the shadow stirring beneath the mountains:
Miners uncover a sealed chamber beneath the lowest shaft—its walls scorched and runes melted. The Iron Guard calls for aid, fearing the ancient evil long whispered in dwarven legend has begun to stir. The heroes must descend before the forge itself turns against its makers.
After six centuries of war, a Bone Breaker emissary arrives under a flag of truce, offering peace. But the dwarves suspect treachery—especially when goblin scouts vanish near Sky Lake. The heroes must uncover whether the pact is genuine or a ploy to breach Frosthelm’s gates.
A Laketown trader disappears after delivering a shipment of Ironstone. His ledger reveals coded entries and payments to unknown dwarves. The heroes must trace the smuggling ring through Frosthelm’s hidden tunnels and devious traps, where greed and loyalty collide.
A Frosthelm dwarf breaks his oath—a crime punishable by exile. Yet he claims his betrayal saved the city from ruin. The heroes must decide whether to uphold dwarven honor or uncover the truth behind his warning of a curse spreading through the lower forges.
