Port Kaldren - Jewel of the South
Port Kaldren is the oldest human settlement in the Southlands, and its history stretches back to the earliest Age of Exploration, when scattered human clans first crossed the southern seas in crude sail‑barges. What began as a windswept landing site on a natural crescent bay slowly grew into a fortified harbor, then a bustling trade city, and eventually the largest port in the region.
The earliest settlers chose the site for its deep natural harbor and defensible cliffs. These proto‑Kaldrenites built stone breakwaters and sea‑walls whose foundations still exist today. Much of Port Kaldren’s ancient architecture—arched seawalls, basalt watchtowers, and weather‑worn temples—dates from this era.
As trade routes expanded, Port Kaldren became the primary gateway between the Southlands and the wider world. Merchant families—later known as the Kaldren Houses—funded shipyards, granaries, and lighthouse beacons. Their influence shaped the city’s politics for centuries, and many still hold power behind the scenes.
During the Age of Storms, Port Kaldren endured decades of pirate raids, sea‑monster incursions, and rival city‑state conflicts. The city responded by constructing its iconic Harbor Bastions, massive stone fortifications built with early dwarven engineering. These defenses turned the port into an impregnable maritime fortress.
Today, the city is a sprawling, cosmopolitan hub—the beating heart of Southlands trade. Its docks teem with ships from Laketown, Penville, Khann, the Savage Isles, and even distant Frosthelm. Though prosperous, the city’s age shows in its labyrinthine alleys, ancient stonework, and the whispered rumors that something old and forgotten still sleeps beneath its foundations.
A sealed chamber beneath the oldest quay begins leaking strange green light.
Rival dynasties hire adventurers for sabotage, protection, or espionage.
Old dwarven tunnels beneath the sea walls lead somewhere they shouldn’t.
A new conflict threatens to erupt, and Port Kaldren is the spark.
