The Deep Crown of the Demon Spine
Falgorin was carved more than 2,000 years ago, deep under the Demon Spine Mountains, where the stone is black, dense, and veined with natural silver‑quartz. According to dwarven rune‑lore, the first delvers followed a “singing seam”—a resonant ore vein whose hum could be felt through the bones.
They discovered Lake Barune, a vast subterranean mirror‑lake fed by hot springs and glacial melt from the ridge above. Its waters were so pure and still that the dwarves believed it to be a gift of Dranos, the Forge‑Father.
Falgorin grew around the lake’s northern shore, its halls rising like stacked anvils, its forges fed by volcanic vents and rune‑bound heat channels.
Centuries before the fall of Crownwood, the dwarves of Falgorin faced the sub‑terrainian dark elf nations in a brutal under‑mountain conflict.
During the earlier conflict beneath the Demon Spine, however, the dwarves held firm. Their survival was due to:
Rune‑Priests whose protective wards blunted shadow‑sorcery
Stone‑sealed choke tunnels that nullified the dark elves’ mobility
Natural dwarven resistance to magic and mind‑warping effects
The elves of Crownwood sent scouts, healers, and arcane wardens to aid the dwarves. This early alliance sowed the seeds of the later tragedy.
When the dark elves recovered from their defeat beneath the mountains, they sought revenge—not against the dwarves directly, but against their elven allies.
The dwarves attempted to march through the Demon Spine passes, but the dark elves unleashed void‑storms and collapse‑runes that sealed entire valleys. By the time Falgorin’s Iron Companies reached the Crownwood, the forest had already become Deadman’s Marsh, and Tir’Vanyel was a drowned ruin.
The dwarves swore an oath of recompense.
Though they could not save Crownwood, the dwarves of Falgorin helped the survivors build anew. They provided:
Raw stone and timber from the Demon Spine foothills
Gold and mithril loans to fund reconstruction
Rune‑engineered harbor machinery for Eldavar’s coastal defenses
A permanent diplomatic envoy known as the Stone‑Leaf Concord
This alliance remains one of the strongest in Tallanon.
Today, Falgorin is a thriving subterranean metropolis, second only to Frosthelm in size but older and more politically influential. Its trade routes include:
North → Laketown via the River Barune outflow and the Upper Whitestone River
South → Dagger Hill through the ridge tunnels
Southwest → Tunnwood & Shady Vale via caravan passes
Far South → Penville & Red Rock Keep, supplying cannon metal and maintaining the fortress guns
The terrain above is harsh—steel cliffs, knife‑edged ravines, and wind‑scoured stone—but the dwarves have mastered it with bridges, switchback roads, and rune‑lit waystations.
Glow‑Reed Moss
Thin, reed‑like moss that emits a soft blue glow. Used by dwarves to mark safe tunnels.
Ironbark Fungus
A shelf fungus with a metallic sheen. When dried, it becomes as hard as oak and is used for shield‑lining.
Barune Kelp
Grows in Lake Barune’s mineral‑rich waters. Edible, slightly salty, and used in dwarven stews.
Ash‑Bloom Vines
Pale vines that thrive near volcanic vents. Their flowers release warm, spicy pollen used in incense.
Stone‑Thorn Shrubs
Hardy shrubs growing in cracks near the surface. Their thorns are razor‑sharp and used as arrowheads by ridge hunters.
Basalt Crawlers
Six‑legged lizards with stone‑like hides. They cling to ceilings and drop onto prey.
Lake Barune Silverfish
Long, eel‑like fish with reflective scales. Considered a delicacy.
Ridge‑Maws
Blind, burrowing predators with crescent‑shaped jaws. Their tunnels often collapse behind them.
Vent‑Bats
Heat‑loving bats that roost near volcanic vents. Their wings shimmer with mineral dust.
Shardback Beetles
Armored insects whose crystalline shells are used in dwarven jewelry.
Gloom‑Owls
Silent, subterranean owls with black feathers and luminous eyes. Considered omens of change.
The Singing Seam Awakens
The ancient ore vein that led to Falgorin’s founding begins to hum again—louder.
Shadows Beneath Barune
Something stirs in the lake’s depths, warping the silverfish into monstrous forms.
The Stone‑Leaf Concord Tested
A diplomatic crisis threatens the ancient alliance with Eldavar.
The Ridge‑Maw Migration
Thousands of ridge‑maws begin tunneling toward the city.
